The Richard Patton Melick Foundation was
established in 1997 to recognize an extraordinary community leader in
Needham. It was to pay homage to a concept characterized by
Dick Melick's life - an attitude and action translated into service:
Willingness to help a neighbor without being asked, a desire to be of
community service without concern for reward, an understanding that "we
the people" are the government, and no democratic society survives
without commitment and realization that citizens develop the quality of
life in a community.
"It is better to light a candle than to curse the
darkness."
People of today in Needham may need no introduction to Dick Melick's
life but those coming in the years ahead will. We who are founders of
this foundation welcome the opportunity to bridge a possible void
between the years ahead and 1997.
